I I Sunday, April 15, 1990 5B Abused wife waits for change DEAR ANN LANDERS: 1 just read I the letter from Victimized in Brooklyn, and my own life was laid right out there in front of mc, hecause too, am a battered wife. My husband is an alcoholic who suffers from depression and paranoia. For nearly four years, I listened to doctors tell me that medication and therapy would help. When "Jack" beat me up for the umpteenth time, 1 had him arrested. Hc was given 30 days but was released after four days on 'good behavior." I nearly fainted when I heard Jack's voice on the phone, telling me that he was out of jail.
The law says 1 have to let him speak to his son, but it docsn't say that I have to take any morc garbage. Again 1 heard him say, "Honey, I've changed." 1 wanted to believe him, but I'd heard that line so many times I didn't weaken. 1 just said, "Fine. You say you've changed? Prove it. Get a job and support yourself.
Join Alcoholics Anonymous. Go through the Options Program." (Options is a selfhelp group for men who beat their wives and girlfriends.) Needless to say, he hasn't done any of the above, but I am determined to keep him out of this house until he proves that he is willing to clean up his act. This is the message I have for your readers. Hang tough. Don't get sweet-talked into anything.
Make the guy prove he is serious. Don't accept his word for anything. It's casy to say, "I've changed." The hard part is actually taking the necessary steps to do it. I know now that 1 was an "enabler." I made it easy for him to continuc to drink and beat me up, because there was never any penalty for what he did. But all that is over.
Al-Anon taught me a better way to live. NJ. Woman DEAR N.J.: Thanks for a great letter. DEAR ANN LANDERS: I am 12 years old, and this is the first problem I have had that is bad enough to write about. My Aunt Lottie is a very nice lady.
She always has a smile for everybody, and she has a big house with a maid to clean up after her. Aunt Lottie comes to our house BRIDGE James Jacoby Wily club Note discard. that the ace and a playing VS. wily heart docs not work. South ruffed with the jack, the jack, but what then? If East plays played a spade to dummy, ruffed another high heart, declarer wins the another diamond, and then played ace and continues the suit, setting up another trump to dummy. Of course, his heart 10 for the needed club disdeclarer might just as well have kept card. So it looked as though South the tead in his hand when he drew the had found the winning line until last trump. That way, he could play a East casually played a low heart. I like going to her house, because it is very big, and I can slide on the polished floors in the halls.
The problem is that Aunt Lottic is a big hugger and kisser. I don't mind this, but she has a lot of colds or the flu. It seems like the day after she hugs and kisses me 1 get a cold. My mom has asked her not to kiss me and my brother when she has a cold, and she always says, "It's all right. I am taking Do antibiotics stop people from spreading germs? I need to know and hope you will help me.
Aunt Lottic's Ncphew in Brooklyn DEAR NEPHEW: Antibiotics do not work against viruses. They are effective only against bacteria. They don't work immediately. You must give antibiotics a few days to take effect. My advice is to your mother.
She should ask Aunt Lottie not to hug and kiss you and your brother unless she is 100 percent well. This is no more than common sense. GEM OF THE DAY (From Richard C. Miller, Hamden, Often it is cheaper to buy something than to accept it as a gift. (R) COPYRIGHT 1990 CREATORS SYNDICATE, INC.
