“Jezebel” was based on a play by Owen Davis produced on Broadway in 1933. (Davis rival Miriam Hopkins played the lead; it was not a success and closed after a short run.) Mitchell's book did not appear in print until 1936. Interestingly, “Jezebel” was written with the fiery Tallulah Bankhead in mind for the lead.

Jezebel was the daughter of the priest-king Ethbaal, ruler of the Phoenician cities of Tyre and Sidon. When Jezebel married King Ahab of Israel (ruled c. 874–853 BCE), she persuaded him to introduce the worship of the Tyrian god Baal-Melkart, a nature god. Most of the prophets of Yahweh were killed at her command.

In Christian lore, a comparison to Jezebel suggested that a person was a pagan or an apostate masquerading as a servant of God. By manipulation and seduction, she misled the saints of God into sins of idolatry and sexual immorality. In particular, Christians associated Jezebel with promiscuity.

The main story focuses on a willful young woman who refuses to follow antebellum conventions and loses her love interest because of her actions. A yellow fever epidemic, which occurred periodically as the virus was brought from the West Indies through shipping and travel, creates dramatic tension for the character.
